Echo Lake

UGH! What a disappointment this campground was! We would never stay here unless we just had to be right in this area for some reason.

The forestry map indicates that the campground is on Hwy 103 east of the turn off for Mt Evans Summit (which is a toll road). That is incorrect. You turn onto the Mt Evans Summit road, and the campground entrance is immediately on your left. There is a lodge and parking lot on your right.

The descriptions we have read of this campground say you have lake views and all that. Not! You can't see the lake at all. The campsites are all right below the highway, with Mt Evans Summmit road and a parking lot to the west.

To make it worse, almost all the sites are "doubles". Checkout the picture below. This is one of the nicest we could find to take a picture of. Why on earth did they make every campsite part of a pair? Who wants to drive out the the national forest to camp cheek-to-cheek with a neighbor? We just don't get it. At least this spot had trees behind it. Many are backed up right along the highway with the road overhead.

If you have an RV with slideouts, this won't be the campground for you. Most of the pairs were so tight that there would be no way to put out the slides with a buddy right next to you.

This is too bad, as Echo Lake itself was very pretty. There is a city run park right next to the lake, but no NF campgrounds. Here is a view of the lake from the road. You can't see any of this from the campground.
