Kingston Peak - offroad in the rain

Activity Date:

The weather started out looking sunny, so we decided to tackle the Kingston Peak offroad trail. It is supposed to have amazing views. The trail starts near the town of Alice. Well, by the time we got there and started up the trail, the rain clouds had moved in. Oh well, we decided to keep going anyway.

Amazingly, the road to get to the Kingston Peak Trail is very rough - it seems like a 4WD trail itself. Hard to believe these are real "town" roads, but they are. They all have normal street names and houses every so often. Alice is a very small town. :)

Here is a jeep passing us on one of the roads we took to the trail.

Yup, more regular "road". We're not even at the trail start yet.

OK, here is the start of the official Kingston Peak offroad trail.

Around some corners, we came out on a plateau with wind stunted trees. The rain cloud has totally socked us in by now. Still, the road is a fun drive.

We've moved above the tree line. This stretch of road was almost like a gully cut into the ground.

A little break in the storm. Up until now, the mountains were just shapes in the grey haze.

Our view the other direction as the road continues.

This is a neat picture that shows our road on the left side, then cutting to the right and down the hillside.

We got out of the jeep and walked out a bit to look over the "edge". It was extremely windy here. It was hard to stand up, you had to lean into the wind. It's hard to tell, but Jeff is being blown to bits and is leaning a bit into the wind in this picture.

We walked out towards the mountain on the other side of the jeep. At the edge, we could see a couple of lakes across the way. We think this is James Peak Lake.

At least the cloud cover lifted a bit, so we have more of a view as we continue. We came down into another patch of wind stunted trees. There are lots of side trails here, with lots of ATVers around.

Our road down the mountain. At least the rain storm didn't make big mud puddles.
